Inference strength predicts the probability of conditionals better than conditional probability does

چکیده

According to the philosophical theory of inferentialism and its psychological counterpart, Hypothetical Inferential Theory (HIT), meaning an indicative conditional centrally involves strength inferential connection between antecedent consequent. This paper states, for first time, implications HIT probabilities conditionals. We report two experiments comparing these with those suppositional account conditionals, according which probability a equals corresponding probability. A total 358 participants were presented everyday conditionals across three different tasks: judging conditionals; probabilities; inference from In both experiments, we found be much stronger predictor than probability, thus supporting HIT.

The Probability of Conditionals

We report two studies investigating how naïve reasoners evaluate the probability that a conditional assertion is true, and the conditional probability that the consequent of the conditional is true given that the antecedent is true. The mental model theory predicts that individuals should evaluate the probability of a conditional on the basis of the mental models representing the conditional, a...

Inference in conditional probability logic

An important field of probability logic is the investigation of inference rules that propagate point probabilities or, more generally, interval probabilities from premises to conclusions. Conditional probability logic (CPL) interprets the common sense expressions of the form “if . . . , then . . . ” by conditional probabilities and not by the probability of the material implication. An inferenc...

Conditional Probability and Defeasible Inference

We offer a probabilistic model of rational consequence relations (Lehmann and Magidor, 1990) by appealing to the extension of the classical Ramsey-Adams test proposed by Vann McGee in (McGee, 1994). Previous and influential models of non-monotonic consequence relations have been produced in terms of the dynamics of expectations (Gärdenfors and Makinson, 1994), (Gärdenfors, 1993). ‘Expectation’ ...

The Probability of Iterated Conditionals

Iterated conditionals of the form If p, then if q, r are an important topic in philosophical logic. In recent years, psychologists have gained much knowledge about how people understand simple conditionals, but there are virtually no published psychological studies of iterated conditionals. This paper presents experimental evidence from a study comparing the iterated form, If p, then if q, r wi...
